Description

Mid 19th century with later additions and alterations. 2-storey with attic, 5-bay (grouped 2-3) terraced tenement with shop at ground. Painted squared and snecked whinstone with droved ashlar dressings (2-bay group to left) and polished ashlar dressings (3-bay group to right). Base course, stallrisers, cornice above shop fascia (2-bay group); eaves course; slightly advanced long and short quoins.

SE (HIGH STREET) ELEVATION: 2-BAY GROUP: deep-set glazed door flanked by plate glass fixed windows; door to outer left with plate glass rectangular fanlight above. Window to each bay at 1st floor, grouped to left. 3-BAY GROUP: plate glass panoramic window at ground with entrance set back to outer right. Regularly-disposed windows at 1st floor.

4-pane timber sash and case windows to 2-bay group; modern glazing to 3-bay group. Slate roof with ashlar coped mutual stacks. Canted piended dormers to 2-bay group. Modern skylights to 3-bay group. Coped skews. Moulded gutter to 2-bay group. Shop gates??????

INTERIOR: not seen, 1995.

Statement of Interest

There was a building on this site in 1823. The NMRS photograph shows that the detailing at ground has altered since circa 1880; the windows at 1st floor of 2-bay group to left had, at that time, cast-iron window guards. There are still shop gates being used, albeit modern, which follows a tradition which is gradually fading.
