Description

1870 datestone, modern extension to rear. Small cottage-villa in Scots Baronial style. 2-storey, 3-bay. Squared and snecked grey sandstone rubble, dressings stugged, droved and chamfered. Rear extension harled.

N (FRONT) ELEVATION: central doorway, low-arched, crowned with crowstepped gablehead supported on consoles, door 6-panelled with plate glass segmental-arched fanlight. Flanked to left (E) by canted window breaking eaves in large, gabled dormer, as Tower, dormer corbelled out with tripartite window. Flanked to right (W) by tripartite window at ground, small unusual canted and gabled timber dormer above.

E (REAR) ELEVATION: central extension at right angles with modern door, picture windows, velux rooflight above. Flanked to either side by

1 window. Plain piended dormer above to right, modern velux rooflight to left.

Original windows timber sash and case, 2 and 4-pane to front, 12-pane to rear ground floor. Roof (including extension) in graded grey Scotch slate. Gabled with crowstepped skews, but extension piended. 2 ashlar gable stacks, each with plain cope and 2 octagonal cans. Decorative rainwater hoppers.

BOUNDARY WALL: rubble with saddleback ashlar coping.

Statement of Interest

Carved inscription "Anwoth Cottage" above front door. Despite rear alteration, this property is listed as the best survivor of several similar villas in this Burgh. The modern garage adjoining the W gable is not included in the listing.
