Description

Circa 1870. 1 and 2 storey with attic, 3-bay, asymmetrical Italianate house with central square-plan entrance tower, single storey wing to outer left, advanced, 2-storey gabled wing to E. Cream sandstone coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. Base course; bracketed cills; deeply overhanging dentilled and bracketed eaves.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: Tower: central round arched doorway; panelled door; plate glass fanlight; plain keystone and springers to architrave; single round arched window to 1st floor above; bipartite round arched window to attic; cast iron finial to roof. Single storey wing to W: central, tripartite round arched window. 2 storey wing to E: 3 light canted window at ground; single window to 1st floor above.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Grey slate piended roofs; tall coped wallhead stacks; moulded cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1996.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low coped boundary walls to street; replacement railings.

Statement of Interest

16 Queens Crescent is one of 3 Italianate villas in the Waverley Park development which was designed by David Cousin for the landowner and former Lord Provost Duncan McLaren. Cousin's design comprises two crescents encircling a residents' park. Each villa was to be different in design to its neighbours.
