Description

Circa 1940. 2-storey wartime operations block, near rectangular-plan, 162' long, flat-roofed with ventilation tower. Harled brick and reinforced concrete. Outer sections slightly lower.S ELEVATION: symmetrically positioned entrance porches off-centre to left and right, 44'2" apart, each 6' 4" wide and 9' 6" deep, concrete slab roofs. Blank walls to centre and flanking. N ELEVATION: outer sections recessed; centre with further smaller

porch wet to left. Recess to left with 2 openings to outer left. Recess to right deeper, no openings. E ELEVATION: door to outer left. Ventilation tower to centre with louvred panels below coped head and flush walls to stack behind. W ELEVATION: opening to centre, shielded by screen walls.

Statement of Interest

The most significant surviving component of the 4 stations operating in Ross and Cromarty in the Second World War, the co-ordinating centre for Tain, Evanton and Fearn Airfields and the Alness Flying Boat Base. Some outbuildings such as the toilet block, have been demolished.
