Mid to later 19th century (circa 1870). Coursed whitewashed render baronial entrance gate to Railway Convalescent Home (formerly Blair Lodge); splayed flanking walls; single storey store to right.
E (STREET) ELEVATION: "Railway Convalescent Home" carved above large, roll-moulded segmental-arched opening centred beneath turreted parapet. Engaged turrets flanking entrance at ground; blind gun-loops; circular panels with thistle carving set in spandrels. 2nd stage comprising rope-moulding, stepped, corbelled string course, armorial panel beneath round-arched pediment, corbelled turrets with spiked ball finials to outer left and right. Decorative wrought-iron gates. Flanking, slightly splayed corniced walls; rectangular-plan pier with dentilled cornice and round-arched parapet to outer left. Round-arched window set in store to right; engaged piers to left and right, pyramidal caps; stepped cornice to rectangular-plan pier with dentilled cornice and round-arched parapet to outer right.
Commissioned sometime during the later 19th century (circa 1870) by Mr Alexander Bannatyne Stewart, Convenor of Bute, a prominent figure in the Glasgow Merchant City and owner of the adjacent Ascog Hall (see separate list entry). This grand baronial entrance orignally formed part of the Ascog Hall estate, but was sold to Blair Lodge, now the Railway Convalescent Home, circa 1929 when Ascog Hall fell upon financial hardship. Despite this change in ownership, the gate remains impressive and has retained some good detailing. The Railway Convalescent Home to which it belongs is not listed.
