Description

Mid 19th century. Symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay plain classical farmhouse with 2-storey, 2-bay addition slightly recessed to outer right; adjoining single storey outbuilding forming L-plan; single storey outbuildings to N and E enclosing courtyard at rear. Whitewashed harl to farmhouse front; raised, painted margins; projecting cills; whitewashed sandstone rubble at rear; narrow strip quoins. Whitewashed rubble outbuildings; painted margins.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3-bay wing comprising modern timber door centred at ground; single window aligned at 1st floor single windows at both floors in flanking bays. 2-bay wing recessed to right comprising modern timber door at ground in bay to right; single window above; single windows at both floors in bay to left. Single storey outbuilding adjoined to right comprising single windows at centre and outer left.

E (REAR) ELEVATION: full-height piended bay adjoining stair tower centred in original block; modern timber door off-set to left of centre; quadripartite fanlight; single window in bay to left; single window at 1st floor; stair window in bay to right. Single window recessed at ground in bay to outer right. Single windows at both floors in 2 bays recessed to outer left.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Graded grey slate roof; raised stone skews; replacement rainwater goods. Corniced ashlar apex stacks to original block; ridge and apex sandstone stacks to recessed addition; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1996.

BOUNDARY WALL: rubble-coped random rubble sandstone wall enclosing site to W.

Statement of Interest

An intact example of a 2-storey farmhouse. With its timber sash and case glazing and single storey outbuildings forming a rear courtyard, some good details have been retained. The remains of St Michael?s Chapel and its surrounding graveyard are situated to the SW (Scheduled Monument).
