Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay symmetrical gothic-detailed house with 3-light canted windows at ground and finialled gabled windows above. Polished cream sandstone ashlar (harled to sides) with polished dressings. Base course; cornice and blocking course to canted windows; eaves course and cornice. Chamfered reveals to windows; aproned cills; stepped hood moulds to 1st floor windows; long and short quoins.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: pilastered and corniced doorpiece centred at ground with blank shield motifs flanking frieze and decorative-headed stylised pediment above; 2-leaf timber panelled door. Canted window with stepped tripartite at 1st floor above in each bay flanking; small roof light set between.

N (SIDE) ELEVATION: round- arched window set window to left at 1st floor. Window set wide to right at 1st floor. Vestigial gablehead stack above.

S (SIDE) ELEVATION: round-arched window set to right at 1st floor. Window set to left at 1st floor. Gablehead stack above.

2-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; ashlar coped stacks; ashlar skews; ridged ashlar skews to gable windows with stone spike finials; bracketted skewputts; cast-iron rainwater goods.

GATEPIER AND BOUNDARY WALL: chamfered sandstone ashlar square-plan gatepier to N angle with gablet cap; stugged and snecked sandstone low surrounding walls with ridged ashlar cope; replaced wrought-iron railings.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1997.

Statement of Interest

No 76 retains fine stone gabled dormers with unusual stepped and hood-moulded tripartite windows.
