Earlier 19th century. Cottage comprising single storey and attic 1 x 2-bay principal block with symmetrical Gothick show-front to NW gable, and single storey 2-bay wing adjoining SW gable. Harl-pointed rubble and drystone walls.
NE (PRINCIPAL) GABLE: symmetrical, base course, blind window centred at ground, pointed-arched blind window centred above and rising into gablehead; buttress-like walls flanking gable with blind windows matching centre at ground, and terminated by square piers with bracketted copes (matching skewputts) to outer left and right.
SE ELEVATION: single window to principal block offset to left of centre; wing recessed at left with door in bay to right and window in bay to left.
SW GABLE: blank, with small rubble buttress at corner to right.
NW ELEVATION: door in bay to left, and small infilled window in bay to right, of principal block; rubble-infilled door centring wing elevation recessed to right.
Stone slabs with inscribed glazing bars to blind windows in NE gable.
Low 2-flue gablehead stacks to SW gables; rubble skew-copes with bracketted ashlar skewputts to NE gable.
INTERIOR: fireplaces to each floor in SW gable of principal block; timber surround surviving at attic. Fireplaces with raised hearths in E and W corners of wing.
A Group with Lunna House, Fishing Booth, Folly, Former Schoolhouse, Lunna Harbour, St Margaret's Kirk, Steading, Walled Garden, and West Gates. The small rooms suggest this building simply functioned as a cottage but was sited on axis with Lunna House and the folly so that its NW gable would perhaps give the appearance of a small chapel. Forming a focus beyond the west gates and an ancient religious site, this building is an essential part of Shetland's best historic designed landscape.
