Description

Early 19th century, and later. Railings surrounding 3 predominantly rectangular gardens; saddleback copes surmounted by square cast-iron railings with octagonal-patterned frieze, spear-headed and husk finials to S (Queen Street) and W (Wemyss Place) elevations and thoroughfares from Queen Street to Dundas and Howe Street, and NE and NW angles of gardens opposite Heriot Row. Modern cast-iron rectilinear railings opposite Heriot Row, to N elevation, including blank frieze pattern with circular decoration centred at panels. Irregularly spaced gates, and double gates with lyre motif centred to N of central gardens.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, representing a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
