Description

Later 19th century. Symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay plain classical style house forming end of terrace with former shop (infilled vennel) adjoined to left. Squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone rubble (whinstone rubble in part to side); droved sandstone margins. Tooled quoins; tooled long and short surrounds to openings; projecting cills.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to timber panelled door centred at ground; 2-pane fanlight; single window aligned at 1st floor. Single windows at both floors in flanking bays. Glazed, pilastered and corniced shopfront adjoined to outer left; gabled dormer breaking eaves above (No 33).

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: flat-roofed, single storey addition off-set to right of centre; irregularly fenestrated in remaining bays.

4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; raised and coped stone skews; bracketed skewputts. Stepped and corniced brick apex stacks to NE and SW; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

Statement of Interest

B Group comprises Nos 9-30 The Green (inclusive Nos excluding 12, 16, 25 and 29), the former Free Church, Main Street (now a village hall) and Nos 29-33, 35, 39, 41, 43, 47, 36, 46 and 48 Main Street - see separate list entries. An impressive house forming the end of a terrace, overlooking the village green. The adjoining shop was originally a vennel (see Post Office photographic archive) and the gabled dormer above is part of the adjoining No 33 (see separate list entry).
