Description

Possibly later 18th century with later additions and alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay (5-bay at 1st floor) plain classical farmhouse with 2-storey addition at rear forming L-plan; further single storey range set at right angles to rear. Whitewashed rubble; painted dressings; sandstone mullions; flush cills. Harl-pointed sandstone rubble to rear elevation single storey range.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to timber panelled door recessed at centre; 2-pane fanlight; corniced tripartite door encompassing narrow sidelights; single window aligned above. Tripartite windows at ground in bays flanking centre (narrower sidelights); single windows in remaining bays at 1st floor (painted imitation window in penultimate bay to outer right). Single storey, 7-bay range recessed to outer right with 2-leaf boarded timber garage doors off-set to left of centre; single windows in remaining 2 bays to left; boarded timber door off-set to right of centre; flanking single windows; 6-pane glazing row in bay to outer right.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: original house with small-paned door off-set to left of centre; single window off-set to right at 1st floor; blind square attic opening off-set to right above. 3-bay wing recessed to left with narrow windows at both floors in bay to right; bipartite windows at both floors in remaining bays to left. Single storey additions to outer left.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: original house with painted imitation windows in both bays at ground; single windows aligned at 1st floor; blind square attic opening off-set to right above. Irregularly fenestrated 2-storey wing recessed to right. Single storey range projecting to outer right.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: original house with single windows at both floors in bay to outer left. 2-storey wing projecting to right.

Predominantly 12- pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; 4- and 8-pane glazing in tripartites; small flush rooflights. Grey slate roofs; stone coped skews; iron rainwater goods. Corniced and whitewashed apex stacks to SW and NE; ridge stack at rear; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

GARDEN RAILINGS, WALLS AND GATEPIER: plain iron railings enclosing garden to front. Rubble-coped, rubble walls partially enclosing site. Stop-chamfered, square-plan coursed sandstone pier to right of entrance; pyramidal cap; modern gate.

Statement of Interest

An imposing, well-detailed and fundamentally intact plain classical style farmhouse, described as "...a neat and substantial dwelling" in the Ordnance Survey Name Book. Rutherfurd notes a John Dove as farmer here in 1866. Neither the associated steading nor the nearby farmworkers' cottages are included in the listing. The remains of a near rectangular-plan walled garden are set to the SW.
