Description

Probably by John Dick Peddie, circa 1870. 2-storey 3 bay former manse (2 bay with 2-storey canted window and lower wing to W at rear). Squared and snecked stugged sandstone, with ashlar dressings.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: regularly fenestrated. Timber panelled door with shoulder-arched fanlight in roll-moulded shoulder-arched surround with hoodmould, curved to ground, framing carved plaque reading 'Free Church Manse.' 3 gabled windows to 1st floor in roll-moulded surrounds breaking eaves; carved motifs in gables. Single storey V-roofed outbuilding adjoining to left.

N (REAR ) ELEVATION: 2-storey 2-light canted window in left bay, corbelled out to square at attic level; heraldic device in gable. Right bay regularly fenestrated. Regularly fenestrated 2 storey single bay wing to right.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: M-roofed, with higher gable of rear section behind. Right gable blank; tall round headed window to left.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: M-roofed; left gable blank; right bay regularly fenestrated, with heraldic device in gable.

Predominantly 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Graded grey slates. Stepped stone skews; Decoratively corniced ashlar stacks with octagonal cans.

BOUNDARY AND RETAINING WALLS: low ashlar-coped rubble boundary wall to front. High random rubble retaining wall to Craighall Road, with arched coping and garden door.

Statement of Interest

Laverockbank Terrace was built on the eastern edge of the grounds of Laverockbank House (demolished). Drawings for several of the houses there (but not this one) are to be found in the Peddie and Kinnear archive at NMRS. Stylistically it would probably be safe to assume that this house was designed by John Dick Peddie.
