Description

CENTRAL RANGE

Later 19th century, possibly incorporating earlier to mid 19th century range. Single storey and attic, near H-plan range. Random rubble with long and short dressings.

SE ELEVATION: near-symmetrical; 3-bay; gabled bay advanced to centre, segmentalarched opening with 20th century sliding corrugated door to ground floor, window opening set in gablehead, spherical stone finial to apex; left and right returns blank; bays to left and right blank with small skylights to attic floor.

NE ELEVATION: asymmetrical; gabled bay advanced to left, segmentalarched opening to ground floor, window above, spherical stone finial to apex; recessed bays flanking to right, irregular openings to ground floor, small openings above; roof swept down over advanced bay to outer right; skylights to attic floor.

NW ELEVATION: symmetrical; gabled; infilled doorway to centre of ground floor, window to 1st floor above; roof swept down over lean-to additions to left and right with broad opening to centre of each, evidence of sliding doors.

SW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; gabled bay advanced to right; roof swept down over advanced bay to outer left; skylights to attic floor.

Predominantly timber-framed windows with broken glass. Purple-grey slate roof with stone ridges. Stone skews. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

NORTH RANGE:

Mid 19th century. Single storey, rectangular plan range to N of courtyard. Coursed rubble, harled to E gable.

SW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; doorway to 3rd bay from left, flanked to right by window, single window to penultimate bay to left and outer left; blank bays to right.

SE ELEVATION: broad opening with timber lintel to centre.

NE ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 3 windows to right, bays to left blank.

NW ELEVATION: harled; single window to centre.

Predominantly timber-framed windows with broken glass. Piended and gabled slate roof with lead and stone ridges. Coped skews to NE. Granite ridge stacks.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

Statement of Interest

The original function of Pirriesmill (Piriesmill on the 1st Edition OS Map) is unclear. Until recently it was in use as a dairy, which closed in 1998. John Hume, however, suggests Pirriesmill was a mill (as the name suggests), and notes evidence of the axle hole for what appears to have been a low breast wheel. However there is no mention of a mill or evidence of a lade on the maps. Some of the original ranges have been altered over the years, however the central range, which appears to incorporate an earlier building, and the cottage and byre range to the N appear largely unaltered. The central range with its segmental arches and spherical finials is particularly well detailed for a modest agricultural building of this type.
