Description

Dated 1904. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay, rectangular-plan freestyle terrace with shops at ground floor; rectangular-plan ancillary structure to rear. Coursed grey granite ashlar, tooled to ancillary structure to rear with finely finished margins. Projecting cills to N, chamfered cills to E; eaves course.

N (DESSWOOD PLACE) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; large plate-glass shop windows to ground floor, with vertically glazed upper panes, panelled timber door with 3-pane fanlight to outer right, flanked by recessed doorway to shop. Segmental-arched window to centre of 1st floor with keystone detail; decorative wallhead stack breaking eaves above, enclosed by 2 buttresses corbelled out on decorative brackets breaking roofline with splayed capitals. Bipartite window to flanking bay to right, piended roof with decorative iron finial. Panelled 2-leaf timber door to ground floor of angle to outer left, curved glass fanlight; hexagonal turret recessed in angle of 1st and attic floors above, 3-light windows to each, hexagonal spire with oversized finial.

W ELEVATION: gabled, opening off-centre to right of ground floor, stair window centred above.

S ELEVATION: ground floor obscured; irregular fenestration to 1st floor; 2 canted dormers to attic floor.

E (WHITEHALL ROAD) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2 gabled bays; large plate-glass shop windows to ground floor, with vertically glazed upper panes. Tripartite window to left of 1st floor, flanked to right by single window. Semi-circular tablet with keystone detail centred in gablehead reading with monogram to centre flanked by "19 04". Ancillary structure, No 3 Whitehall Road adjoining to left; broad segmental-arched doorway with keystone detail to centre, 2-laef modern timber door with fanlight, centre plane slightly advanced; curvilinear blocking course swept-up to form simple parapet; single buttress breaking eaves with splayed capital to outer left.

Predominantly 2-pane timber sash and case windows with decorative geometric upper pane. Grey slate roof with lead ridge, piended to No 3 Whitehall Road. Coped stone skews with simple skewputts. Corniced wallhead and gablehead stacks with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

BOUNDARY WALLS: coped granite rubble boundary wall adjoining No 3 Whitehall Place to outer left, incorporating modern garage door; Coped rubble wall with square-plan gatepier to W.

Statement of Interest

Unusually detailed block on prominent corner site. Of particular note are the elaborate wallhead stack, recessed angle turret, and unusual glazing to the uppers sashes of windows.
