Description

Built circa 1827 by James Smith of Deanston for James Finlay and Co, merchants and cotton spinners, proprietors of Deanston Mills.

Massive gravity dam on River Teith, faced in sandstone ashlar, of self-clearing type set diagonally across river, with log trap on N side and fish ladder on S. Tail of weir fish-tailed. On S masonry wall and sluices, with cast iron frames and hakes for trapping leaves etc, serving lade to mills.

Statement of Interest

The largest weir of its type in Scotland, supplying a massive water-power installation of which only part was completed. James Smith was renowned throughout Britain as a water engineer.
