Description

Mid 19th century. Single storey Picturesque cottage with additional attic, porch and later extensions; irregular plan. Sandstone ashlar.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: M-gabled, right projecting, porch addition in re-entrant angle, heavy bargeboards, diamond quarry slit window; left gable 2-storey single bay, sliding cases, diamond quarry, door to left return; right gable, modern door, light above and flanking, slit window to right, sliding window in gable

N ELEVATION: earlier rubble gable end built up; twin 8-pane sash and case windows, ashlar surrounds; plain inset plaque in gablehead; bargeboards, finial; twin chimney pieces on rectangular plinth, square tops, mismatched cans.

S ELEVATION: later extension, bargeboards, door to left, 8-pane sash and case window to right; to left return 2-pane sash and case window, bipartite 8-pane sash and case, stone mullion, down pipes to left, chimney piece to right.

W ELEVATION: 1 ?-storey, 2-bay; ground floor earlier construction, twin 12-pane sash and case windows; dormers above, bargeboards, decorative finials, triple pane sliding case windows, diamond quarry; chimney stack to each gable; to left later extension, 12-pane sash and case window.

Unusual sliding casement windows with diamond quarry, double to front, triple to back. Piended slate roof with overhanging eaves, white bargeboards and rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

Statement of Interest

B-Group with The Bush House, Stable Courtyard and Laundry House. The head gardener used this house in late 19th century times. After the creation of the walled garden, circa 1870, the cast-iron section of the fence allowed him to keep watch over the produce after hours.
