Description

John Forrester Steel, 1907. 2-storey, 3-bay symmetrical classical Masonic Lodge with Tudorbethan details. Red sandstone ashlar facade with rusticated base, brick to sides and rear. Oriel window to 1st floor

SW (ELEVATION): Bull-faced masonry base course; oculus to centre ground with projecting architrave and keystone, square headed door with plain architrave rising to semicircular hood moulded arch framing semicircular fanlight. 2-light window to left with similar mouldings and surround. Bowed oriel to centre at 1st floor on fan corbel; oriel flanked by windows in outer bays framed with paired Ionic pilasters on prominent dividing band course and corbels; projecting cornice and frieze; stepped and corniced parapet scroll flanked with segmental pediment to centre bay bearing embossed panel 'LODGE ST.MARY COLTNESS MASONIC NO. 31'.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 2000.

NW (SIDE) ELEVATION: unfenestrated brick.

SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: unfenestrated brick.

Later glazing except to small-pane oculus and fanlights at ground. Roofing unseen 2000.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000

J F Steel was a successful Wishaw architect who worked in a heavy Classical, Mannerist or Arts and Crafts Style.
