Built onto the rock to provide a level surface for the construction of Crown Square and the surrounding buildings above, the Great Hall, the Palace and the block to SW known as the Queen Anne building (now the United Services Museum). Used at various times as stores, arsenal, bake-house, civil and military prisons and barracks.
