Description

Alexander Petrie, 1900. 3-storey, 7-bay, T-plan, symmetrical, classical school building. Red ashlar sandstone to front facing elevations, channelled to 1st storey, squared and snecked rubble to sides and rear. Bull-faced base course, string course between 1st and 2nd storeys, eaves course, projecting cornice, blocked parapet. Tall rectangular windows.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: single storey, advanced parapeted flat-roof entrance porch to centre, timber-panelled doors to returns, flanked by paired windows. Plain frieze above set with blind oculi and inscribed; WILLOW BANK PUBLIC SCHOOL. Regular fenestration to 2nd and 3rd storeys, blank central bay with shield to centre inscribed; ERECTED IN THE YEAR 1900, blind oculi between storeys, articulated with giant order pilasters. Attic frieze inscribed; SCHOOL BOARD OF GLASGOW.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 2002.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: 6-bay. 4-bay advanced block to left. 2 bays to right similar to principal elevation, stone mullioned bipartite windows to left. Continued to left return; Steps to square-headed entrance within inscribed semicircular arch, panel inscribed GIRLS, above; pilastered 2nd storey window, brackets supporting semicircular-arched pediment. Irregular fenestration to advanced bays to left, engaged stack, breaking eaves, to centre right.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: mirror of E except side door panel inscribed BOYS.

10-pane, timber frame sash and case windows. Grey slates, lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2001.

BOUNDARY WALL, RAILINGS AND GATES: low wall, bull-faced courses, ornate cast-iron railings fixed to saddle-back coping. Blocked square-plan gatepiers, fluted frieze, pediments terminating in shallow-domed drum caps. 2-leaf ornate cast-iron gates.

Statement of Interest

Willowbank Primary School commissioned by the Glasgow School Board was one of Petrie's (c1836 to 1910) last works, his body of works being mainly tenements and offices as well as a considerable number of churches for various denominations.
