Circa 1880. 2-storey square-plan villa with conical-roofed turret; lower rectangular-plan 2-storey addition at rear. Coursed sandstone with polished quoins, long and short surrounds, transoms, mullions and canted bays. Base course; cornice to ground floor of canted bays; banded cill course to 1st floor; bargeboards; ornately carved bracketed gable forming pediment above canted bay to SE; dormers to turret to centre of SW elevation.
SW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 2-storey, gabled, canted bay at left; 2 lights with mullion and transom to central face at each floor; single, transomed light to side faces at each floor; moulded cill and cornice to centred tripartite window at ground, with columns forming mullions; bipartite window to 1st floor above; single storey canted bay at right, with windows as above; transomed tripartite window to 1st floor, above crenellated parapet to canted bay; lean-to porch projecting from SE elevation, forming entrance at outer left; low coped wall and columns at left of ashlar steps; panelled timber door set back.
SE (MURRAYFIELD AVENUE) ELEVATION: moulded cill and cornice to window of lean-to porch at ground to right; corniced panel to 1st floor above; engaged octagonal turret at centre, with transomed lights to front 3 faces at ground, transomed and mullioned at 1st floor above; 3 (1 at front, 1 at each side) dormers breaking eaves of finialled turret; transomed tripartite window at bay to left, both floors.
Timber-framed sash and case windows; multi-paned upper sashes. Red-tiled roof; coped, coursed sandstone ashlar stacks with squat cans; cast-iron rainwater goods.
BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: low coped rubble boundary wall to street; tall, square-sectioned sandstone gatepiers with dentilled cornice and swept, moulded caps.
This is one of a pair of grand villas on the east of Murrayfield Avenue. It was built as part of the earlier villa development in the area before the pressure of property led to the construction of higher density houses in the area.
