Description

Robert Warwick Morrison, sculptor (working for Stewart and Co.), 1920. Tapered, square-plan column on double plinth supporting a full-sized statue of a Gordon Highlander resting on his rifle. Rusticated granite with polished granite name plaques bearing parish roll of honour. Column inscribed at top, 'WE GRATEFULLY REMEMBER ALL THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR'.

Statement of Interest

A good example of a figurative war memorial to the First World War.

Robert Morrison (1890-1945) was a gifted carver who was known for his attention to detail. He was a fast worker, being able to carve the figure of a soldier in six weeks as opposed to the usual six or nine months. He produced a number of memorials in northeast Scotland including that at Rhynie (see separate listing).
