Description

Circa 1865. Single storey, 3-bay cottage with box bed and adjoining byre (now garage). Whitewashed rubble with lime mortar, cottage apparently rasied slightly at wallhead. Deep set openings.

SW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Timber door to centre with windows in flanking bays; slightly lower byre to right with boarded timber door.

NW ELEVATION: gabled elevation (possibly raised) with window in bay to right.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: tiny window to centre.

SE (BYRE) ELEVATION: gabled elevation altered to garage door. 12-pane glazing pattern in modern replacement timber windows. Grey slate with stone ridge and concrete skews. Coped brick gablehead stacks with cans.

INTERIOR: boarded timber ceilings; box bed and stone fireplace with bracketed timber mantelpiece and small cast-iron range in room to W; similar fireplace with segmental cast-iron inset to E room.

Statement of Interest

Survival of once common vernacular farm building type, further singled out by retention of fine interior detail. Its non-appearance on the 1st edition OS map of 1864, and absence of roads relating, is surprising, as the form of the cottage would be typical of earlier 19th century equivalents. It is clearly shown on the 2nd edition map. Formerly part of Nether Warburton Farm, the cottage was once home to twelve people. The brick stacks may be original as there was a brickworks at nearby Inverkeilour, and lime was available from Bodden limekiln, also close by.
