Early 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay traditional house. Large squared rubble, red sandstone blocks with stone margins, and snecked rubble to sides and rear.
SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Panelled timber door to centre at ground, windows in flanking bays and regular fenestration close to eaves at 1st floor, modern rooflights over outer bays.
SE ELEVATION: blank gable part obscured at ground by harled wall.
4-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates with stone ridge and 2 modern rooflights. Coped squared rubble stack to SE and brick stacks to NW, both with thackstanes and cans (some polygonal); ashlar-coped skews with small moulded skewputts.
No 4 John Street is a little altered early survivor of a traditional design in a pocket of Stonehaven's harbour area largely re-developed in the 20th century. Sited close to the Shorehead, it was probably a merchants house with easy access to the busy port.
