Situated on a small hill within a garden enclosure directly to the rear (N) of Inversnaid school and schoolhouse, the memorial stone is located near the E boundary of the enclosure, with its inscribed face to the W. The basket-arch headed stone bears the following inscription:
THE DUKE OF MONTROSE
TO THE MEMORY OF THE
NON-COMMISIONED OFFICERS AND MEN
2ND, 3RD, 4TH, 12TH, 13TH, 14TH, 15TH, 16TH, 17TH,
18TH, 20TH, 21ST, 23RD, 31ST AND 43RD REGIMENTS
WHO DIED WHILE ON DUTY
AT INVERSNAID GARRISON
The stone is evidence of the history of Inversnaid as an important 18th century military settlement.

The enclosure also contains several very small 18th century headstones, most of which are buried under turf. One of these has a shaped head and bears an inscription dated 1750.
