Circa 1848. Single storey circular-plan stone reservoir filtering cistern building with boxed timber overhanging eaves and central 16-sided timber slatted ventilator with pointed finial. Finely pointed coursed droved ashlar with base course, moulded eaves course and advanced stone cills. 4 equally spaced 12-pane timber sash and case windows with 20th century protection grilles. Timber overhanging eaves, graduated slate roof.
The Edinburgh Water Company constructed the Torduff Reservoir in 1848 and its associated structures including the dam, filter beds, filtering cistern and dam keeper's house to serve the city of Edinburgh. This set of buildings is an early example of reservoir construction; the filtering cistern is a good example of a simple utilitarian building design.
The associated mid 19th century filter beds are still in situ to the W of the filtering cistern with a later 20th century ancillary building immediately adjacent.
