Mid 19th century. Pair of 2-storey 3- bay Queen Anne detailed cottages with prominent pedimented dormerheads breaking eaves above 1st floor windows. Squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings. Base course. Stone mullioned bipartite windows at ground (mullions removed from No. 81 to form shop windows; mullioned bipartite windows to inner bays at 1st floor; single windows to outer bays. Central 2-leaf timber-boarded doors to each cottage in roll-moulded architrave with small rectangular fanlight above lintel.
Predominantly 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows.Shop windows to 81, multi-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes in timber sash and case windows.
Grey slate. Corniced gable and ridge stacks with clay cans.
INTERIOR: No 81 with modern shop fittings, other rooms on ground floor with some original timber work still in situ.
Nos 81-3 Ayr Road form a well detailed pair of cottages set in a prominent location on the main road in the centre of Douglas village. The buildings are now sub-divided, the ground floor of both in commercial use, with the upper floor residential.
