Description

Early 19th century. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay, square-plan classical house with round arched window to gabled attic, prominently located on high ground to the E of Newtwon St Boswells and former stable block to S with round-arched brick openings. Coursed red sandstone rubble with smooth buff ashlar dressings; raised stone cills; in-and-out quoins; moulded cornice.

S (Garden) ELEVATION: moulded stone doorpiece with scrolled brackets supporting lintel canopy. Corniced windows flanking. Shoulded pediment gable with round-arched attic window to centre, small chimney stack to apex.

Single-storey, half-piended, outshot to N (road) elevation; central stair window above, flaked by blind window openings with tall wallhead stacks above.

12-pane glazing to timber sash and case windows. Piended roof, grey slate. Tall, coped wallhead stacks with ashlar quoins; predominantly square clay cans.

GARAGE BLOCK (FORMER STABLE): single-storey, piend-roofed former stable (converted to garage). Buff brick (now harled) with red brick margins. Round-arched door flanked by round-arched windows to side elevation. 2-leaf, timber vehicle doors fronting road; further timber door to rear. Fixed timber-framed windows. Grey slate.

GATE PIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: circular-plan, squared and snecked rubble gate piers with conical caps. High rubble walls with rounded coping stones.

Statement of Interest

Taynuilt is a well-detailed classical villa, built on a diminuitive scale on high ground. Its symmetrical, classically proportioned garden front with its round-arched gable window, remains significantly unaltered and is clearly visible from the main road, adding much to the historic character of the village. Its tall wallhead stacks distinguish the property, adding to its interest.

Also of note is the detached former stable block to the SW of the house with its simple round-arched openings adding further value to the Tweedside Road streetscape and to the wider setting of the house.

Tweedside road is the early 19th century core of Newtown St Boswells, and contains many of the villages earliest houses. The road is a cul-de-sac, terminating in the former United Presbyterian manse.
