Statement of Interest

An interesting example of a brick built light with well-detailed eaves course. Located on a hillside overlooking the harbour the building is an important reminder of the danger ships encounter to approach and is a prominent landmark in this significant fishing village. For its building type has an unusual streetscape setting.

This light was one of a pair of leading lights constructed to guide vessels into the harbour. The lower light, no longer evident, was on the inner wall of the harbour (Hume, 1977). Vessels would align the lights to indicate the approach to the harbour. This light is painted white so that it could also be used as a daymark. The building was reroofed circa 2000 following a fire and the original incandescent bulb has recently been with replaced with a LED light (2013).
