1854 (E pier) and 1903-4 (W pier, James Barron, engineer) on earlier harbour site. Tooled square rubble with some concrete dressings and facings.
E pier extended 1909 (Mr Stevenson, engineer, Edinburgh) projects as straight arm into sea. W pier shaped as shallow U-plan; piers meet to form harbour entrance enclosing polygonal basin fronting shoreline at S. Seaward face of each pier raised as seawall to shelter quayside; shallow concrete slipway extends from shore.
W pier repaired at cost of £17,000 in 1981. The harbour is independently administered by local harbour trustees.
First harbour constructed in 1704 sheltering the beach enclosed by present piers and the only rock-free landing
place in Pennan Bay. A second harbour was constructed in 1799 which seems to have been destroyed (as was its predecessor?) by storms. The E pier was constructed in 1854 and the remainder of the harbour piecemeal after that.
Plaque set in W pier reads: 'This stone was laid by Miss Elizabeth Maconachie, Strichen House, 20th August, 1904. The Rev Charles Birnie, Chairman, Harbour Committee. James Barron, Engineer'.
