History

Late-Georgian house of c1830. The low service wing to the N is said to have earlier origins, suggesting an earlier house on the site, and the rear elevation also looks earlier in character. Shown on the Tithe map of 1839, but possibly slightly shorter. The wing was extended and altered in the mid-C20; the house itself restored in the late 1970s.

Exterior

Symmetrical 2-storey 3-window house, the front of red brick on a stone plinth, under a slate roof with 2 large brick ridge stacks. The N gable end is of brick, the S gable end rendered, and the rear elevation of random stone. Front has central entrance reached by stone steps; moulded architrave with pediment, and fanlight with radial glazing. 6-panel door under a classical-style fanlight with radial glazing. The windows are 12-pane hornless sashes with wedge lintels and stone sills. Cellar opening to R. North gable end has 2-windows on each floor, with sashes as front; attic has a blind 9-pane window; above upper R sash, a small plain-glazed light; the single storey wing adjoins to lower R. South gable end, partly visible, has small casements offset to R of ground floor, a small horned sash to L of 1st floor and an attic window. The rear has openings with flat or cambered stone heads, all with renewed small-pane wooden glazing. Doorway offset L of centre with half-glazed boarded door; 3-light casement to L, very small light to R, French doors to far R. In the centre at mid-level is a tall stair-light with round-arched head. To its L, single top-hung light, to its R, a 2-light casement. Attic has 2 small gabled dormers with horizontal-sliding sashes. Single-storey wing adjoining N end has mid-late C20 detail. Front is of brick under a slate roof with brick end stack; French doors and top-hung windows with small-pane glazing.
