History

Probably mid C19, contemporary with the adjacent houses at Penlan and Bryn. The house was not marked on the tithe map of the parish, 1840, but the steps are indicated, suggesting that the houses at the top were either under construction or planned at the time of the survey. The annex at the N was within the ownership of Penlan in the 1990s - it was used as an air raid warden's lookout during WWII.

Exterior

Linear range aligned roughly N-S, comprising house to S and annex to N end. Built of rubble masonry; slate roof with rectangular gable stacks with dripstones and capping. The principal range looks out over the road to W, 2 storeyed, a 3-window range with central panelled door and 16-paned sash windows with moulded labels and slate sills. The is a taller, single window wing with smooth rendered front elevation, and similar windows.

Interior

The interior was not inspected at the time of the survey (June/July 2003).

Reasons for Listing

Listed as a good mid C19 house that retains many original features, including fenestration and characteristic estate detailing such as the moulded labels. Forms a group with the adjacent houses overlooking Bull Street and other buildings in the centre of the estate village of Maentwrog.
