History

Probably built as part of the 2nd Lord Newborough's improvements in 1820's. Although not directly related to his canalisation of the Afon Llifon this bridge is stylsitically similar to those in front of the house. The west drive originally entered the park by the present (but later) Grand Lodge and ran in a broad arc south-eastwards where it met the south drive and then approached the house through the plantations to the south.

Glynllifon was the seat of the Wynn family and Sir Thomas John Wynn became the 1st Lord Newborough in 1776. The house was rebuilt after a fire 1836-48 by Edward Haycock, architect of Shrewsbury.

Exterior

Ashlar single-arched bridge carrying a level roadway low over the river. The segmental arch has voussoirs and is flanked by small swept abutments. The parapet has rounded coping though that to the downstream side has collapsed.

Reasons for Listing

Listed as an elegant earlier C19 estate bridge and for group value with other listed items within this major Welsh landscaped park.
