11-MAY-83 BARN IN THE GROUNDS OF GREAT WALSTEAD
SCHOOL TO THE NORTH OF WALSTEAD HOUSE

(Formerly listed as:

SCHOOL TO THE NORTH OF WALSTEAD HOUSE)

II
C18 timber-framed barn, with later additions.

Covered in tarred weather-boarding, on a rendered plinth. The original pitched tiled roof now appears to have a gablet at the southern end, where a one bay extension, under a hipped roof, has been added. There is a further single-storey lean-to extension to the south end, which adjoins Tythe Cottage (unlisted). To the north the barn adjoins The Coach House (unlisted). The eastern elevation has a central single doorway and evidence of several blocked window openings, along the length of the barn.

The interior was not inspected.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION
The Barn in the grounds of Great Walstead School is designated at Grade II for the following principal reason:
* Architectural Interest: A good example of a C18 barn.
