23.11.73 The Salt Box

Small house. c.1700; altered and enlarged in 1924. Handmade red brick in
Flemish bond, red tile roof. Two-unit plan, now double-depth by addition to the
rear (perhaps replacing a smaller rear extension). Two storeys and 3 bays, with
cellar and attic; the symmetrical facade has a gabled centre breaking forwards
slightly, a plinth, and a 3-course band to each bay; an added gabled porch in
matching style and materials, with a board door and a lunette above; 2 windows
at ground floor and 3 above, all with gauged brick heads, those at 1st floor with
recessed panels below the sills, and all furnished with C18 12-pane sashes which
have very thick glazing bars and are not counter-balanced (the upper leaves
dropping onto retaining catches in the frame); a central gable with an oculus,
brick coping and kneelers, and a weathervane on the apex; and at the left end
of the facade an unusual rainwater head with a prominent horizontal spout in the
centre. Both gables have brick coping with kneelers, and chimneys at the rear
corners, but the coping of the right-hand gable has a flat top run into the
chimney stack (giving a profile like a salt-box). Attached to the left return wall
is a modern conservatory, and the 1924 addition projects behind this. This rear
addition is in matching style and materials. Interior: exposed beams and joists at
ground floor (undecorated), and an exposed timber-framed partition wall to the
staircase; central doglegged staircase winding round a newel, with closed string,
square newels, and turned balusters; at 1st floor, a fireplace with bolection-
moulded wooden surround and cast-iron ducks-nest grate.
