FETCHAM THE STREET TQ/15/NW (east side) 2/59 Ballands Hall 2.4.70 GV II

Rectory, now private house. Probably late C17, altered in C18 and C19. Brick, mostly covered by painted stucco (facade) and roughcast, with roof of red tiles and some blue slate, brick chimney stacks. H-plan formed by double-depth centre range under a 2-span roof, with 2-unit crosswings. Two and 3 storeys, 2:3:2 bays (including wings); symmetrical; the 2 storey 3-bay centre has a full-width flat- roofed porch with a central round-headed doorway flanked by 12-pane unhorned sashed windows, a cornice and parapet; three 12-pane sashed windows at 1st floor; and a balustraded parapet. The tall 3-storey 2-bay wings have similar sashed windows at ground and 1st floors, one 6-pane sash at 2nd floor, and pedimented gables. All the windows at ground and 1st floor level have C19 wooden hoods. Chimney between the ridges, very large external chimney at left return wall (which is of exposed brick), extruded chimney at right-hand return wall. The rear has a pedimented doorway in the centre with glazed double doors, French windows in the south wing with hoods, a flat-roofed 2-storey extension to the north wing, 12-pane sashes at 1st floor (those in the wings also with hoods), 6-pane sashes at 2nd floor of the wings, and a balustraded parapet over the centre, like that at the front. (A ballroom and large conservatory attached to the south wing in the early C19 were demolished earlier in the C20.) Interior: entrance hall with 2 columns on the line of the former front wall, and diagonal rear corners; to the rear of this, an C18 open-well staircase with open string, scrolled brackets, 2 turned balusters per tread, and ramped handrail with wreathed curtail; in front room of left wing, a brick inglenook fireplace with unusual wooden surround of fluted pilasters (with berries carved in the upper half), and muntin-and-rail panelled overmantel, the top decorated with C17 strapwork, and built-in bookcase to the left of this with similar surround; to the rear of this room, a C17 staircase doglegged to the full height, with closed string, square newels, and stout turned balusters; in the attic all 4 ranges of the roof have exposed principal rafters with 2 pegs visible halfway up.
