Whiteley Village

Almshouse group. Circa 1912 by Sir Reginald Blomfield. Red brick with brick
dressings and quoins. Hipped plain tiled roofs with tall panelled stacks to centre
ridge. Central projections with wide open segmental arch. 2 identical blocks
joined by central, triple arched arcade and central pediment over,flanking urns.
Blocks: 2 storeys with four casement windows on first floor, those in centre of
"Venetian"type. Entrances with round arches set in panels in outer bays of ground
floor. Steps on each side leading to side entrances on first floor of upper flats.
Whiteley village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk, and was laid out on an octagonal plan designed by Frank Atkinson, employing
leading architects of the day.
