Church of St Mary

A Grade I Listed Building in Cavendish, Suffolk

Nave and Chancel.

Uploader's Comments

In 1381 Sir John Cavendish bequeathed £40 for the construction of the Chancel. He was Chief Justice of the King's Bench and beheaded during the Peasants' Revolt. The brass eagle lectern is C15th, given to the church by Elizabeth I. The chancel is at a lower level than the nave, one of only four English churches where this is the case. The north aisle was re-built in 1425 and the nave arcade and clerestory added in 1485.
