Former farmhouse. Late C16. 2 storeys and attics; T-shaped form: main range and cross-wing. Timber framed; rendered main range; the cross wing encased in whitewashed brick. Black glazed pantiles. A large external chimney-stack to each range, one with a pair of attached diagonally-set square shafts. Various casement windows, those in the front of the main range replaced during restoration in 1985; in the cross-wing mainly 3-light casements with transomes, the oldest C18, with the remains of square leaded panes, and those of the C19 with segmental arched heads to frames and surrounds. On the rear wall is a series of reinstated original mullioned windows with some of the mullions reproduced: 3 of 3-lights with chamfered mullions to the upper floor, one to the stair, and another beside the chimney-stack of 4 lights, with ovolo-moulded mullions; all have intermediate bars. Studded plank entrance door within a small open gabled timber porch. Much substantial timbering exposed inside, with evidence of considerable reuse of components. Restoration has altered the layout somewhat, but established that both ranges are contemporary. The principal room to the right of the main range has an open timber ceiling with 3" chamfer and stepped scroll stops to the main beam; close studding on 2 walls, and a wide, open fireplace with a flat moulded brick arch, the bricks in a mixture of soft reds and yellows. Remains of a cross-entry; the service area to the left of it formerly had a half cellar. A ladder stair of wide dog-leg type links the 2 ranges. On the upper floor, evidence for a former storied porch to the cross-entry, and a blocked door in the right gable, either for an outside stair or for a further section of the main range. The upper ceilings and attics are original. The cross-wing originally contained one 3-bay room on the ground floor. Both ranges have identical roofs, with 2 rows of butt purlins and additional intermediate collars between trusses. To the north of the house is an associated moated site. The farmstead was formerly the property of St. John's College, Cambridge, which accounts for its name.
