Description

BATTISFORD CHURCH ROAD
TM 05 SW

5/3 Kestrel Cottage and
Willow Cottage (formerly listed
25.10.78 as Willow Cottage)

- II

Two cottages, built as one house in two stages: Kestrel Cottage was rebuilt in
c.1700 largely of medieval components, and comprises the hall range; Willow
Cottage comprises a parlour block probably of C17 but remodelled in mid C19.
One storey and attics. 3-cell plan. Timber-framed, the front elevation
encased in C19 red brick, the rear plastered. Thatched roofs with C18/early
C19 casement dormers. An axial C17/C18 chimney of red brick, and a C19
chimney of gault brick to left. Small-pane C19 casements with cambered heads.
Kestrel Cottage has a boarded entrance door, Willow Cottage a C20 flush door.
The framing of Kestrel Cottage is fully'exposed internally; most of the main
components and rafters are smoke-blackened and are reused from a medieval open
hall. 1st floor joists of c.1700; possibly sycamore, and set on-edge. In the
hall is a lintelled open fireplace.
