Description

BATTISFORD VALLEY ROAD
TM 05 SW

5/21
- Tye Cottage

- II

House, mid C16 with mid C20 alterations. 3-cell lobby-entrance plan; the hall
was originally open. 1 storey and attics. Timber-framed and plastered.
Concrete tiled roof, formerly thatched. Axial C17 chimney of red brick, the
shaft mainly rebuilt C20. Mid C20 casements with leaded lights. Lean-to mid
C20 porch with framed and boarded door. The parlour cell has exceptionally
closely-spaced studding. The fireplace was virtually rebuilt in mid C20 but
retains evidence for a fully-framed timber chimney, including studs which
formerly rose from the bressumer (the latter removed). The open truss of the
open hall has slightly cambered tie-beam and evidence for long arch braces. 3
original 4-centred doorheads, repositioned. Roof renewed C20. Included
despite C20 alterations because of unusual sub-medieval form of house.
