House, C15 core with major remodelling of c.1550-1570 and of early C19. 2
storeys. 3-cell lobby-entrance plan. Timber framed and plastered. Slated
C19 roof with axial chimney of red brick. Metal casements of c.1980. Mid C20
panelled entrance door in gabled porch at lobby entrance position. Part of a
C15 open hall survives, consisting of close-studded walls and a cambered
tiebeam (formerly with massive archbraces) at the open truss. In early or mid
C16 an upper floor was inserted into the hall with a heavy bar-stop chamfered
bridging joist, and an open fireplace with very deep cambered lintel. Circa
1550, a new parlour block was built; good exposed ceilings over the parlour
and chamber have double-ogee moulded beams and roll-moulded joists (c.p.
College Farmhouse, Lt. Stonham, Item 2/133). In C19 the roof was rebuilt and
an outshut added to rear, and at some early stage the original C15 service
cell was demolished and not replaced. Included despite C19 and C20 alterations
because of extensive and good-quality C16 work.
