(North-east side)
The Lodge


Former lodge. Probably C18. Regular coursed and rubble sandstone with plinth and
splay string course. Flat roofs are hidden behind coped parapets. Rendered
stacks to rear. Irregular plan. C16 style. Main front at right angles to road
has deep Tudor-arched doorway and studded door with strap hinges in left corner.
Recessed chamfered mullioned windows, of one light to first floor. Polygonal
turret in angle to right rises above parapet and has slit windows. Right range
has cross window with remains of hood mould to ground floor. First floor is
blank, but has heraldic device in relief. Left return side to road has 3-light
window with transom to ground floor; late C20 two-light casement above is
inserted into the old opening. Lean-to range on left has one-light window and
stepped screen wall, with plain-tile roof behind. Interior has chamfered beam
and open fireplace.
