GAYDON KINETON ROAD SP35SE (North side) 8/68 Gaydon Manor Farmhouse 30/05/67 GV II

Manor house, now farmhouse. Dated 1673, but probably late C16 origins. C18 and C19 alterations. Regular coursed lias with ironstone dressings; left part of main range largely rebuilt in C19 brick. Old tile roof, hipped to cross wing; wing has C18 brick internal stack; C19 brick ridge and internal stacks to rear. Complex T-plan, with cross wing to right. 2 storeys and attic; 3-window main range, one-window wing. C18 four-panelled door and overlight in angle. C20 open porch. Stone recessed chamfered mullioned windows of 4 lights to ground floor and 3 lights above. Front part of wing forms a 2-storey room. Large C20 two-storey 2-light wood casement with 3 transoms; brick surround and concrete lintel. Left return side of wing has similar window to right. 4 and 3-light mullioned windows in angle. Left return side of main range has reconstructed 3-light mullioned window. Brick first floor has datestone with moulded oval panel and initials M.A., twisted pilasters, projecting cornice and steep broken pediment. 3-light attic casement. Irregular rear has gable. Interior: V.C.H. records C17 staircase with turned balusters, square newel posts with bail finials and moulded handrail. South-west room and kitchen have heavy stop chamfered beams. Kitchen has open fireplace, with winder stairs beside it entered from entrance hall. Parlour has moulded stone fireplace and reset late C16 panelling with fluted frieze. Another room has arched doorway. Large open fireplace and ceiling beams. 2-storey room in wing has C18 bolection panelling and panelled shutters. First floor room has C18 moulded angle fireplace. Another room has cupboard door with cock's head hinges. The house was the home of the Askell family. (V.C.H.: Warwickshire, Vol.5, p.88).
