Description

ARMITAGE WITH HANDSACRE C.P. OLD ROAD
SK 01 NE
6/11 No. 1
-

- II

Cottage. Early C19. Sandstone ashlar; hipped plain tile roof; stone
and brick central stack. Octagonal plan with entrance to the east
and short kitchen wing to the north-east. Tudor Gothic details.
2-storeys. Mullioned and transomed windows with ovolo-moulded mullions
and transoms and straight cyma recta-moulded dripstones. Both window
and doorways have ogee and concave quarter circle moulded surrounds.
The position and nature of the cottage suggests that it may have served
as a lodge to the predecessor of the Armitage Shanks factory which now
occupies the site to the north.
