Four dwellings, formerly an inn. C16, remodelled C18 and sub-divided C20. Timber
framing with rendered and brick infill; colourwashed brick; old and recent
plain-tile roofs with brick stacks. 5-unit plan with 2 rear wings. 2 storeys
plus attics. 5-window C18 brick front, with stepped plinth, storey bands and
plain parapet, has a central carriage entry with plank double doors. To left are
2 segmental-arched sashes with thick glazing bars; first floor sashes have been
renewed, and heads and parapet rebuilt. To right, an elaborate doorcase, with
fluted Composite columns and a carved frieze, has been added, flanked by large
C20 bow windows; at first floor are two 16-pane sashes plus a shorter sash over
the entry, all with segmental arches. The parapet rises as a gable with a
2-light casement. To extreme right is an elaborate lead rainwater head. Roof has
a large stack to left of the entry, and 2 gabled roof dormers to extreme left.
The one-bay timber-framed left rear wing retains a 5-light canted oriel at first
floor, with ovolo-moulded mullions, leaded lights and a small gable. To left is
a small high-level mullion window and there was probably a similar window to
right. Timber-framed right rear wing has probably been shortened at first-floor
level, but continued as stables, now converted to a dwelling (No.46). Interior:
No.52, to left of entry, has a large open fireplace, a first-floor fireplace
with a moulded-brick fireback, chamfered-and-stopped joists and beams, some very
heavy flat joists, and massive curved windbraces in the roof.
