Church of St Mary, Fishley

A Grade II* Listed Building in Upton with Fishley, Norfolk

Original Bell Sounding Opening

Uploader's Comments

One of four original early 12th century original bell sounding openings, hidden from view within the tower for century's until they were brought to the attention of English Heritage by Churchwarden Ivan A Barnard. Stephen Heywood's report for English Heritage states. "The blocked original bell openings are clearly visible from inside the tower. The openings have rubble dressings and larger pieces of rubble or broken lava quern stones forming imposts. They have simple semicircular heads. They are a very valuable survival showing one of the most simplest forms of Romanesque bell opening".
