GV II

Courtyard retaining wall and probable former dovecote with attached
outbuildings. Early C18. Red brick wall with high stepped plinth to south-east
side and chamfered red sandstone coping; approximately 26 metres long and
2 metres high; blocked segmental-headed doorway adjacent to house. Probable
dovecote incorporated in wall approximately 2/3 of the way along its
length: red brick with pyramidal slate roof; 2 storeys; high stepped plinth
to south-east, and dentil brick eaves cornice; north-west front: first-floor
louvred square opening with segmental relieving arch and ground-floor
segmental-headed boarded door off-centre to left; small low wing projecting
at left with stone-coped parapeted gable and segmental-headed boarded
loft door to front; right-hand return front of dovecote with segmental-
headed boarded loft door and pair of low segmental-headed ground-floor
doorways with flanking small square openings, one to left with stone
ledge, and pair of small segmental-headed openings above. Lean-to outbuilding
adjoining dovecote to north-east with lean-to corrugated iron roof, and
2 windows and door to front. Interior of dovecote not inspected. The
dovecote and retaining wall form one side of a service courtyard to the
north-west of Ford House (qv). V.C.H., Vol. VIII, p.226.
