TQ 2881 NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER HARLEY STREET, Wl 45/35 (East side) 10.9.54 Nos. 92 and 94 G.V. II* Terraced town houses. c.1777 Portland Estate development, probably by John White in partnership with the plasterer Thomas Collins (associates of Sir William Chambers). Stock brick; slate roofs. 4 storeys (dormered mansard to No. 94) , on basements. 3-window wide fronts. Broad semicircular arched doorways to left with Coade stone vermiculated rustications and head keystones; panelled doors, pilastered sidelights and moulded doorheads, plain and patterned fanlights. Recessed sashes, under flat gauged arches to upper floors. 1st floor plat band and sill band; cornice over 2nd floor and modillion cornice and blocking course. Continuous early C.19 cast iron balconies to 1st floor. Cast iron plumbed spike area railings. Good intact interiors more elaborated than the speculative norm for these 1st rate houses though with similar features; spacious top lit stone geometrical staircases with anthemion-lyre pattern wrought iron balustrades, swag ornament to drums of skylights; fluted and swagged friezes, and wreathed ceiling panels, No. 92 with inset painted panels in 1st floor drawing room ceiling in the Adam manner, but combined with the standard use of stucco mythological relief medallions in the Chambers style over the chimneypieces and used to good effect in the hall of No. 94 which has an archway preceding the staircase; inlaid marble Ionic columned or pilastered chimneypieces; mahogany doors; etc.
