RCHM 122. Probably C17, refronted. Early C18. Possibly by Vanbrugh or
Hawksmoor but more likely by William Townesend. 3-storeyed (partly renewed)
ashlar and timber-framing with cellars, a Welsh slate hipped roof and red
brick stacks. A projecting cornice and a band at the 2nd floor. There
is a slightly projecting centrepiece having pilaster strips with moulded
caps and a Doric entablature; the central doorway in it has a semi-circular
head and above this is a massive keystone and a sash window; above the entablature in the 2nd floor is a casement window in a segmental keystoned head. On each side of the centrepiece and in the 1st floor are 2 sash windows (mainly
original) in plain reveals with keystoned architraves and aprons to the moulded
cills; the ground floor windows however are without keystones and have shutters;
and those in the 2nd floor have segmental stone heads and wooden casement
lights. At the back the reconstructed wall is part of the city wall. See
CITY WALLS (St Michael's Street). Interior: RCHM page 171a. Includes C18
panelling, staircase and fireplaces.
Nos 18 to 24 (consec) form a group.
