GREAT HARWOOD QUEEN STREET and SD 73 SW TOWN HALL SQUARE 2/76 National Westminster Bank - GV II

Bank, c.1900, originally branch of Manchester and County Bank. Ashlar, with slate roof and copper-clad dome. In free Jacobean style. Two facades, hinged on a chamfered corner surmounted at roof level by an octagonal turret surrounded at the top by 2-light stone mullion windows, with corner colonnettes carrying a copper dome. Both facades have a dentilled string course and a cornice with egg-and-dart decoration, both end in a gabled attic with finials and a mullioned window; both have a multiple light transomed 1st floor window with Ionic pilasters to jambs and mullions, both have cornices to these and other windows (which are double-tiered); and both have low attic dormers. At ground floor the Queen Street facade has a doorway with decorated surround, oval fanlight and corniced canopy on large moulded consoles; the other facade has mullion and transom windows.
